The Demag AC 220-5 is a 220-tonne all-terrain crane mounted on a five-axle chassis, designed for a wide range of heavy lifting applications. Its primary lifting tool is a 78-meter main boom (HA78), which features a single-cylinder telescoping system for automatic extension. For additional reach and versatility, the crane can be equipped with several lattice extensions, including an 11.4-meter folding swing-away jib (HAV 11 m) and a 21-meter double folding swing-away jib (HAV 21 m), both of which can be manually angled at 20° or 40°, or hydraulically adjusted from 0° to 40° with the HAV-HY option. A 1.6-meter runner (MS) is also available for added lifting height. The crane features a counterweight system that can be configured up to 70.2 tonnes, with the basic counterweight being 51.6 tonnes. The AC 220-5 is powered by a Scania DC13 diesel engine producing 368 kW (500 HP), compliant with Euromot 4/Tier 4F emissions standards, and features an automated ZF AS-Tronic gearbox with 12 forward and 2 reverse speeds.
A key feature of the Demag AC 220-5 is its advanced control and safety systems. The crane is equipped with the IC-1 Load Moment Indicator (LMI) system, which includes an integrated electronic load moment indicator in accordance with EN13000, a color display, and a crane data logger. An optional IC-1 Plus system is available, which is an intelligent control system that allows for higher lifting capacities, especially when working over the outriggers. It enables the safe use of the crane’s full capacity even with asymmetric outrigger configurations and includes a lift planning application with a graphical interface and cabin simulation. The crane’s outriggers feature a 4-point H-design with fully hydraulic vertical and horizontal movement, and four outrigger bases (2.75 m, 5.54 m, 7.0 m, and 8.4 m) allow for flexible setup on various job sites. The outrigger basis monitoring system provides individual monitoring of the horizontal stroke and warns the operator of any deviations in the crane cab.
For transport, the crane is optimized for efficient road travel. The carrier features a 10 x 6 x 10 drive configuration as standard, with an optional 10 x 8 x 10 configuration for increased traction. The crane’s suspension is hydropneumatic with axle load compensation and hydraulic locking, ensuring a smooth ride and stable operation. The AC 220-5 offers various steering programs, including all-wheel steering, crab steer, and independent rear axle steering, making it highly maneuverable on tight job sites. The brochure details numerous hook block options, ranging from a 32-tonne single-sheave block to a 160-tonne seven-sheave block, providing flexibility for different lifting tasks. The crane also features a range of safety and convenience features, such as an electronic immobilizer, a pneumatic tire inflation adapter, a jump-starting device, and contour safety markings. The spacious S-PACE carrier cab and crane cab offer comfortable operator environments with features like adjustable seating, climate control, and tinted safety glass.
